About
As a printmaker, my work combines traditional handcrafted printmaking techniques with contemporary design processes, sustainable practices, and a strong appreciation for material and craft. Working primarily with relief printing and screen printing techniques, I create bespoke prints and textiles that celebrate the unique qualities of the handmade process. I love the immediacy of printmaking and it is central to allowing each piece to develop its own character and individuality.
Much of my inspiration comes from the vast landscapes and rugged coastlines encountered while travelling across the UK, with a particular love for Scotland. As an avid collector of natural found objects, I find myself continually drawn to the detail in natural forms and local wildlife. Themes of home, a sense of place, and our connection to the natural world run throughout my work, which is rooted in mark making, and surface design, exploring the relationship between observation and process.
I also work as a freelance print designer and printer collaborating on creative projects. Alongside this I am a member at Leicester Print Workshop and work as a Print Technical Tutor at Loughborough University, supporting students in developing their technical skills and creative confidence within print and textile design.
Florence graduated from Loughborough University in 2022 with a BA (Hons) in Textile Innovation and Design: Printed Textiles.
My Process
I’ve always cherished hand crafted processes, creating and working with my hands. Working with relief printing and traditional screen printing these techniques allow me to be expressive with texture, colour and highlight the joy and spontaneity of the marks that can be created. Each artwork begins with a sketch often drawn from location or found forms which becomes the foundation of each piece. After I have the drawing, I work on engraving the image into Lino blocks or hand drawing artworks for screen exposure before hand printing.
